BA Fashion Design Teacher job with Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp

This is a Job Vacancy for a BA Fashion Design Teacher in the Fashion Department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp for the 2024/2025 Academic Year, beginning October 1, 2024.The precise year in which the candidate will teach will be decided in function of who is chosen and where their capacities are best suited. 

The primary function of this position is of a Design Teacher who works in collaboration with a Coupe Teacher, Drawing Teacher and Digital Teacher to guide students through their design work, including but not limited to, historical research, collection design and realisation, graphic work and installation design. Our education is both concept and result based, focusing on developing students as designers, artists and independent thinkers. The Fashion Design department of the Antwerp Academy is internationally known for its idiosyncratic approach to fashion design as a creative process. The international appeal of the Department means that most students come from abroad and all our teachers must be able to handle a large diversity of cultural values, viewpoints and communication styles. Within the team, we work with 18 different teachers in a tight knit manner and clear communication with emotional understanding is highly important. Part of the role also includes administrative upkeep, organisation and logistics of important academy dates such as the Open Door Day, Entrance Exam and the organisation and logistics of the end of year SHOW. 

 

As Gastprofessor in BA Fashion Design, your main tasks and roles are: 

  • Teaching the students in Fashion Design through a curriculum and schedule that will be given to you 
  • There is room for you to tailor the curriculum and schedule towards your pedagogic point of view, however the core values and system of the school must be respected (this will take the form of an initial conversation with the Director and Coordinator of the department before the year starts) 
  • Understanding the conceptual setup and creation of a collection from concept to drawing to prototyping and realisation 
  • Understanding abstract silhouettes and experimental design 
  • Having a broad and diverse understanding of creativity and difference tastes 
  • Having a vision on fashion and fashion education beyond its current state 
  • Giving extensive and clear feedback to the students both in class and in written form 
  • Being able to communicate and work well within a team 
  • Being in Antwerp at least 2 days per week to give class 
  • Being available for monthly team meetings and other team building or academy faculty meetings 
  • Being available in January and June for the intense Jury/Evaluation periods and the SHOW in June 
  • This includes being a part of the Pre-Jury and Juries of all the other BA and MA years 

 

PROFILE 

  • Abilities/Capacities: 
  • Fluent both verbally and in writing in English and Dutch (or willing to begin learning Dutch upon arrival) 
  • Preparation of lessons, didactic materials, and curriculum 
  • Able to work with Office 365 and Adobe Creative Suite 
  • Able to engage and motivate students to experiment and work with them to find their own personal style and artistic approach to design 
  • Able to understand of Fashion with a strong focus on Drawing based Design 
  • Able to translate ideas from 2D to 3D with a strong focus in coupe and garment construction 
  • Strong Drawing Skills 
  • Able to lead and guide a large group of students in a very individual basis 
  • Able to cope and function within a high intensity work environment 

 

REQUIREMENTS 

  • Bachelor or Master Diploma in Fashion or Fine Arts 
  • European citizenship or Residency Status 
  • At least 5 years’ experience teaching fashion or designing within the fashion industry (both are recommended but not required)

 

OFFERING 

We offer hospitalisation insurance. This is free of charge for staff members with an employment rate of 70% or more. Family members of our employees can also join (subject to a contribution). 

You will receive a full refund for commuting by public transport or a bicycle allowance of 0.231 euros/km. 

 

SALARY 

You will be employed contractually for 75% (28.5 hours/week), with a 9 month contract from 01-10-2024 to 30-06-2025. 

You will receive a bruto salary of €1993,74/month 

You can receive recognition of professional experience for up to 10 years prior.
