Apple might be late to bring AI features to the iPhone, iPad and Mac, but its newest software update does bring some really useful features. Dubbed “Apple Intelligence”, the new AI powered features have started rolling out today for everyone who have updated their device to iOS 18.1 beta, iPadOS 18.1 beta and MacOS Sequioa 15.1 beta.
The Cupertino based tech giant had first unveiled these features earlier this year in June at WWDC 2024, claiming that iOS 18 will redefine the way you use your iPhone, iPad and Mac. Available on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 series and iPads and Macs powered by Apple silicon, some of these features will be available in the coming months.
However, Apple Intelligence is currently available only for those living in the United States. Here’s a list of the new AI features that are currently available on iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and MacOS Sequioa 15.1 alongwith the upcoming ones.
Smarter Siri
While Siri is yet to get ChatGPT treatment, the newest software update does bring some nifty upgrades, making Apple’s a lot smarter and more useful than it used to be.
Instead of the Siri icon on the bottom, you are now greeted by a colourful ring that illuminates the side of the screen. Also, Siri can now understand what you are trying to say even if you fumble or tip over words and lets users type in their query in case they are unable to use voice.
One of the biggest changes to Siri is that users can now ask the voice assistant how to perform different tasks like how to record screen, get help with resetting AirTag and more. However, some of the most anticipated features like app context and the much hyped Visual Intelligence are still underway.
Writing tools
With iOS 18.1 beta, users can now use Apple’s Writing Tools to refine their words by letting users ask AI to rewrite, proofread and summarize text. Apple says these Writing tools will work across all apps, including stock apps like Mail, Notes and Pages.
Summarised notifications
Powered by Apple Intelligence, the Summarised notifications feature automatically summarises notifications from various apps and brings a new Focus mode called Reduce Interruptions that only shows notifications that may require your immediate attention.
The pre-installed Mail app can now sort Priority Messages by understanding its context. Instead of the first few lines of an email, the app will show a summarised version of the email.
Apple Photos
Apple has also added a bunch of features to its Photos app. Similar to Google Magic Eraser, you now get a Clean Up tool that lets you remove objects from an image by generating a background over it.
Other features include the ability to search for photos using natural language and generate Memories via a simple text prompt.
Upcoming Apple Intelligence features to look out for
Apple says several new Apple Intelligence will be coming to the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 16 series “later this year and in the months following.”
Image Playground and Image Wand
This includes “Image Playground”, an AI powered image generator that allows you to create images from scratch and “Image Wand”, a new functionality that turns your sketches into images.
Genmoji
The much awaited Genmoji feature, which lets you create a new emoji using a text prompt like ChatGPT or using an existing image will also be available in the coming months.
Visual Intelligence
Siri will be more capable in the coming months, with the AI powered personal assistant able to under the context and information on your screen and deliver personalised experiences. Apple says this intelligence will work across first as well as third party apps.
A few months from now, Siri will also be able to use ChatGPT to complete certain complex requests. However, the user will be asked first if they want to pass the query to the AI chatbot.
How to enable Apple Intelligence features on your iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 16?
Unlike other smartphone manufacturers that come with already enabled AI features, you will have to manually turn on Apple Intelligence on your phone.
To do so, head over to the Settings app, under Apple Intelligence, tap on Join the Apple Intelligence waitlist. If you are not a part of Apple’s public beta program, head over to beta.apple.com and follow the instructions on the page to join the program.
When is Apple Intelligence coming to India?
Apple is yet to share a definitive timeline for when it will be bringing the upcoming AI features to iOS 18, but it did say that Apple Intelligence will be coming to India sometime next year.
