The Sixth Generation Toyota RAV4 is Here With Upgraded Performance, Technology, and Safety Features

Toyota has officially unveiled the sixth-generation RAV4, introducing a hybrid-only powertrain strategy alongside upgraded performance, technology, and safety features. Building on its global success—over 15 million units sold since its 1994 debut—the 2026 RAV4 aims to meet the evolving needs of modern drivers.

Electrified Powertrain Across the Lineup

Toyota has phased out the traditional gas-powered engine in favor of its fifth-generation hybrid system. The front-wheel-drive (FWD) hybrid variant now delivers 226 horsepower, a 23 hp increase over the outgoing FWD gas model. All-wheel-drive (AWD) hybrids produce 236 hp, up 17 hp from the previous generation. While official fuel economy numbers have not yet been released, Toyota expects improved efficiency thanks to updates to the power control unit and battery system.

The plug-in hybrid version—replacing the RAV4 Prime—features Toyota’s sixth-generation technology. It combines a larger traction battery, dual electric motors, and advanced silicon-carbide semiconductors to deliver 320 hp and an improved all-electric range of 50 miles, up from 42 miles in the previous model. Select trims, such as the XSE and Woodland, now support DC fast charging. All models include an 11-kilowatt onboard charger, with the SE and GR Sport using the J1772 port.

Despite the shift to electrified powertrains, the RAV4 retains its towing capabilities. AWD models can tow up to 3,500 pounds, while FWD variants increase towing capacity from 1,500 to 1,750 pounds.

Trim Categories and Configurations

Toyota has organized the 2026 RAV4 into three design-focused categories:

  • Core Design: Includes LE, XLE, and Limited trims. These models come standard with the hybrid system, with LE and XLE offering both FWD and AWD and Limited available exclusively with AWD.
  • Rugged Design: Represented by the Woodland trim, this version emphasizes off-road capability with features like all-terrain tires, a roof rack, and auxiliary LED lights. It is available only with AWD and can be equipped with either the hybrid or plug-in hybrid system.
  • Sport Design: This category includes SE, XSE, and the newly introduced GR Sport. The SE is available with both hybrid and plug-in powertrains in FWD or AWD configurations. XSE is AWD-only and supports both powertrains. The GR Sport, Toyota’s first performance-focused RAV4, comes standard with the 320-hp plug-in hybrid and AWD, offering faster acceleration than its predecessor.

Refreshed Styling and Interior

The updated RAV4 features design enhancements such as a larger front grille, 20-inch wheels, and a rear roof spoiler. Inside, drivers will find a more upscale cabin with suede and synthetic leather trim, a new 10.5-inch infotainment screen, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

Select trims offer a larger 12.9-inch touchscreen that houses Toyota’s latest Audio Multimedia system. This platform supports faster processing, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and dual Bluetooth connectivity. A new static home button improves overall navigation.

Advanced Safety Features

The 2026 RAV4 introduces Toyota Safety Sense 4.0, incorporating enhanced sensors and updated safety technologies. Key features include:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Lane-Keep Assist and Lane Tracing Assist
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Front Cross Traffic Alert
  • Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Vehicle Approach Indicator
  • Secondary Collision Brake
  • Advanced Remote-Controlled Parking
  • Panoramic View Monitor
  • Enhanced Lane Change Assist

The sixth-generation RAV4 is expected to hit the global market in March 2026. Pricing details are yet to be revealed.
